Image of a parent red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegena) swimming while carrying one of its young chicks. Grebes are migratory birds. During the breeding season grebes showcase red plumage even though they are mainly grey in the winter. Grebes prefer calm shallow water which explains why I came across this young family of grebes on a really calm day near the shore of lake Ontario in Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
